Memories of Rex

REX --- The Wonder Dog January 1, 1987, I was traveling from Ferriday, Louisiana back to Palestine, Texas, where I was living and about half way there, I saw this little white dog lying on the side of the road almost frozen to death. I stopped, picked him up, and carried him to my vet. He had no collar so we put ads in papers, called the vet places and animal shelters in the area. No one ever claimed the dog; therefore, I kept him. He finally responded to the name of REX...so...Rex it is!!! Later I moved to Shreveport, Louisiana..and while there he jumped to greet me and slipped a disk in his back. I found a wonderful bone specialist, took Rex to him, and he operated on Rex. However, before the operation, the doctor could give me no hope that Rex would ever walk again. But, I was willing to take the risk. Sure enough after the surgery, Rex could NOT walk. We went thru 6 months of therapy, treatments, exercises, etc...and..finally he was able to stand and after 6 months he began a very feeble walk. He had a terrible "twist" to his walk. As he grew older, he got arthritis and there were some days that he has a lot of trouble walking.....but....he was so happy. He never forgot that I rescued him, loved him, and took care of him. When the *time* came because of the cancer, I was heart broken; and, he knew it. He tried in his way to comfort me; and, I had to be strong for him. I stayed with him until the end and he just went to *sleep*. I had him cremated and no matter where I live, Rex is *there* also. It gives me great comfort to know he will not have to get wet. He hated to get wet the worse I ever saw. He would walk a *country mile* to keep out of a mud puddle or water. I miss him so; but, know that he is better off.....
